In Bologna, 1100 AD, Asinelli, a poor gravedigger living on the margins of society, makes a desperate pact with Death to marry Princess Garisenda and escape his humble fate. Driven by ambition, he manages to build the tallest tower in the city and wins her hand. After the birth of their daughter, Garisenda dies and Death returns to claim the promised price: the firstborn child. Realizing the terrible cost of his choice, Asinelli attempts to rebel and defeat Death, but finds it calmly waiting at home with his daughter.
